Tavares Brothers Set to Participate in 12°N, 61°W Grenada Film Festival, 2024 season

A Homecoming to Inspire Grenada’s Creative Future!

This year’s sixth edition of the 12°N, 61°W Grenada Film Festival (1261 Film Festival) marks a historic moment as it welcomes two brothers, Giaka and Kibwe Tavares, as active participants. This is the first time the festival has featured siblings, and their involvement is set to inspire and elevate the local creative community.

Hailing from London, with a Grenadian mother from Gouyave and a Jamaican father, Giaka and Kibwe have achieved global success. Giaka, an acclaimed composer, musician, and multimedia artist, is known for blending sound with cultural narratives. Kibwe, an internationally renowned director and architect, gained recognition for his groundbreaking films, including The Kitchen, a recent Netflix hit.

Their participation in the 1261 Film Festival is a professional engagement and a personal mission to reconnect with their roots and give back to Grenada’s growing creative industry. They aim to inspire and nurture the next generation of Grenadian artists, filmmakers, and musicians.

Their return highlights the power of the Caribbean diaspora, joining the ranks of other influential British artists of Grenadian heritage, such as Steve McQueen and Kwame Kwei-Armah. Giaka and Kibwe hope to demonstrate the global potential of Grenadian stories and culture, encouraging local creatives to embrace their unique narratives.

Giaka will perform during the festival’s Mystique Masquerade Gala on October 24th, 2024 and host masterclasses for Grenadian musicians. Kibwe will lead filmmaking workshops focused on storytelling and technology in film production. These sessions offer invaluable opportunities for local artists to learn from two of the industry’s top talents.

The festival will also host a Meet and Greet event on October 16th, allowing attendees to connect with Giaka, Kibwe, and other industry leaders, including Tiffany Yarde, a New York-based scriptwriter and Director of Programs for Roadmap Writers.

Their involvement reflects a deep commitment to supporting Grenada’s creative future, and their participation in the festival is just the beginning of an ongoing effort to help shape the next chapter of Grenadian storytelling.

Don’t miss this extraordinary opportunity to be part of Grenada’s creative future. Join us at the 1261 Grenada Film Festival and experience the celebration of talent, culture, and creativity firsthand!
